Taekwon-Do ITF holds a proud legacy in the Netherlands, beginning in 1965 when it was first introduced to Dutch soil. In 1966, the Dutch Taekwon-Do Association (NTA) was founded, quickly establishing …
70 years of Chang-Hun Taekwon-DoToday, April 11, 2025, the world celebrates the 70th anniversary of Chang-Hun Taekwon-Do, a special moment for millions of practitioners worldwide. What began in 1955 as a vision of the Founder, General Choi Hong Hi, has now grown into a rich, versatile martial art and philosophy of life. Chang-Hun Taekwon-Do is more than a sport, it is a path of physical development, mental growth, moral awareness and global connectedness. The roots of a global movementThe Founder of Chang-Hun Taekwon-Do, Gen. Choi Hong Hi, developed the style in the 1950s based on traditional Korean martial arts, combined with modern scientific principles and military discipline. His goal was not only to create an effective defense art but also to form strong, just and responsible people. In 1966, he founded the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) to spread his vision worldwide. Today, his legacy lives on, thanks in part to many grandmasters, masters, instructors and students.I would like to mention his son, Grandmaster Choi Jung Hwa, who, as president of the ITF world organization, continues the original mission with dedication. Under his leadership, the organization continues to work for the authentic values of ITF Taekwon-Do, while also responding to contemporary challenges and opportunities. The five moral pillarsWhat makes ITF Taekwon-Do unique is not only its physical intensity, but above all its emphasis on personal development. The five moral (Do) pillars, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and an indomitable spirit, form the heart of the practice. They provide direction, inspiration and support, in the Dojang and in daily life. For many, Taekwon-Do is a lifelong path. It offers structure, self-confidence, discipline and a sense of connection. Young and old, beginners and advanced, everyone can grow at their own level within this tradition.ITF Taekwon-Do in the NetherlandsIn the Netherlands, ITF Taekwon-Do has also conquered a strong and proud place. The style has been practiced here with dedication since the second half of the 1960s. My TAG club member and ITF-RD donor, Mr. Ed van Breemen, was one of the founders of the Dutch Taekwon-Do Association NTA (1966) after his training in the Netherlands with GM Park Jong-Soo. We are proud that he is still among us at the age of 92 and is still working on our beautiful art every day.Taekwon-Do Foundation ITF-RD (INO 388), which is affiliated with the world organization ITF Choi Jong Hwa, also plays a central role in preserving and strengthening the ITF Taekwon-Do tradition. The foundation provides structure, organizes national exams, teacher training courses and seminars and monitors the technical and moral quality of ITF Taekwon-Do in the Netherlands.Since this year, a new, promising development has also been underway: an intensive cooperation between ITF-RD, the Dutch Taekwon-Do Federation and ITF TNT (Taekwon-Do Netherlands Team). These organizations have joined forces and will continue under the existing name ITF-RD to share their shared passion and responsibilities. Through this cooperation under the new name, we also organize joint events, training courses and consultation moments to increase the quality, accessibility and mutual connection within the Dutch Taekwon-Do community. New schools that want to continue practicing the original style and philosophy of General Choi are always welcome! This cooperation as created even more space for the exchange of knowledge, inspiration and support between the Masters, instructors and members. This synergy is of great importance for the future of ITF Taekwon-Do in the Netherlands.Towards the future, with respect for the pastAs we celebrate 70 years of ITF Taekwon-Do, we not only look back but also forward. The world is changing, but the core values of Taekwon-Do are timeless. Especially in these times when physical and mental resilience, respect and connection are essential, ITF Taekwon-Do offers a powerful counterbalance to division and unrest. With the efforts of dedicated teachers and enthusiastic students, the future of ITF Taekwon-Do in the Netherlands is very much alive. Together with our ITF friends in the world we build on the foundation that was laid in 1955, with respect for tradition and an open mind for innovation.ITF Taekwon-Do is alive, in the world and in the Netherlands. And the journey has only just begun! On behalf of the ITF-RD board,Taekwon,Master Hennie ThijssenPresident ITF-RD … Bekijk meerZie minder
